The Alchemist Project
Option 1 (Pairs):
Create a “Guide to Fulfilling Your Personal Legend” handbook. Construct a book which gives steps and helpful information in the quest to fill one’s personal legend. The book should focus on the achievement of one specific personal legend. For example, the title of one handbook may be: “A Guide to Fulfilling Your Personal Legend: President of the United States.” The book should serve as an inspirational and informative guide to those who are pursuing a specific goal or dream.
If you choose this project, refer to the experiences and life lessons Santiago acquires along his journey to assist you in this writing process. Handbooks should be organized, informative, and above all, creative.
Guidelines:
Choose the specific personal legend which the group is going to write about. Examples: professional baseball player, President, college graduate. Divide your handbook into informative chapters. Your handbook should include specific references to lessons learned in the novel. Teams should focus on the steps outlined by Coelho in the story and explain how these steps can be followed for one to achieve success with your chosen personal legend. Evidence from "Slumdog Millionaire" must also be included in the presentation. Your guide should include illustrations. Guides should be constructed in electronic form and will be presented to the class. Presentations should be 5-7 (10-12 in groups of 3) minutes in length.
Option 2 (Pairs):
“The Alchemist & The Universal Truth” - You will create a visual/electronic presentation that outlines and describes the many universal truths presented by author Paulo Coelho in The Alchemist and in "Slumdog Millionaire". Each Truth must be identified and explained in the presentation. The focus of the presentation is to look a how these Truths can help a high school senior learn important lessons about life and ensure success for the future.
Guidelines:
The visual presentation must be 5-7 (10-12 for groups of 3) minutes in length and will be presented to the class. Your presentation should focus on the lessons learned in the novel and the ways in which a high school senior can use each truth to ensure success in the future. The presentation should have evidence from both the novel and the film. All work must be divided equally. Most importantly, your presentation should be interactive, fun and creative.
